Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is the ideal resident for the Universal Possibilities housing facility?
    • Our housing facility is for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) who are able to live independently, with all of the rights and responsibilities that are afforded to other adults.
    • Residents should be able to complete activities of daily living (ADLs) on their own, including bathing, grooming, dressing, cooking and eating.

  • Who is not a good fit for our facility?
    • Our program and campus are NOT a good fit for individuals requiring:
      • Around-the-clock care and supervision,
      • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, grooming, dressing, and eating,
      • Caregivers for mobility assistance and transfers,
      • Specialized medical care, including regular check-ups, medication, administration, and management of health conditions,
      • Caregivers for decision-making and daily care.
  • Will there be a staff member in the facility at all times?
    • We plan to have a Resident Manager, similar to a Resident Assistant (RA) in a college dorm, living in the building.
    • It is important to note that Universal Possibilities will not be providing services to individuals. Residents will be responsible for providing their own services, most likely through Self-Direction funding through New York State’s OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities).
    • The apartments are aimed at individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) who are able to live independently, and do not require around-the-clock care.
  • What type of apartments are planned?
    • We are planning apartments that will have approximately 500-600 square feet.
    • The apartments will include a kitchen area, living room, bathroom and one bedroom.
    • Visit our UPLift Wellness Program page to view our conceptual designs for our facility.
  • Can more than one person share an apartment?
    • All apartments will be one-bedroom with only one occupant in each apartment.
  • Will there be an assessment of skills needed to live independently?
    • Yes, we plan to assess the skill levels of applicants.
    • There will be an application and interview process, focusing on ensuring that each individual has the ability to meet independent living requirements. Please see our Independent Living Skills page for guidance.
    • To ensure the safety of all residents, there will also be background and/or reference checks.
  • Will this be low income housing?
    • The apartments are intended to be market rate apartments.
    • Individual residents may be able to receive housing assistance through their Self-Direction budgets.
